I rarely offer spinning tuition as it’s my ‘me time’ but I had a lovely email requesting some one-to-one tuition and felt I couldn’t refuse!

Jess asked if she could learn to prepare yarn, starting with the raw fleece, carding, dyeing and spinning.

We started by washing some soft as butter Shetland and lustrous Leicester Longwool, to give us two very different fibres for dyeing, preparation and spinning.

After washing, we dyed up the fibres along with some alpaca, Texel, Merino roving and silk hankies.

We also did a bit of yarn dyeing (well, it would be rude not to, really 😉 ).

A natural spinner, Jess moved almost effortlessly from the handspindle to the wheel, combing the Leicester Longwool, carding the Texel, working directly from the fibre with the alpaca and even spinning some silk directly from the hankie.

We finished with some Andean plying and by the end of the weekend, Jess had two lovely skeins of hand prepared, hand-dyed and handspun yarn as well as three lovely skeins ready to knit up into socks! Great work Jess!
